Heart of Ohio Pattern Classic

The D4 opening season contest took place in Grove City, OH  June 3rd and 4th, hosted by the Torks RC Club and CD Dowayne Gould.  With 30 pilots from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky  and New York, the competition was tough and furious. Considering the nonstop rainy weather preceding this event, actually ending just in time for the weekend contest, the level of flying was competitive in most of the classes.  With a northeast/southwest paved runway, and a wind out of the north at 5-15 mph, the competitors got in a lot of crosswind practice both days.  A tough way to start the year, but everyone handled it well.

There were a couple incidences of mechanical failure, radio problems, and some guys who could only make it for the first day, but the majority of the pilots got in a full 6 rounds.    Tom Weedon had the misfortune of loosing his pipe, leading to his early with drawl.  Bruce Herider had a problem with orientation and lost his plane in a low altitude maneuver.  Gerald Price blew a glow plug.  Ken Alexander had the misfortune of running off the runway into a ditch full of water from the heavy rains, the plane is ok and he finished the contest, but had to do a thorough drying out before he could get back into it.  Pete Collinson's Genesis went into lockout and went in at a 45 degree angle.  The plane wasn't recoverable, but his backup is about ready and he should be back soon.  The highlight of the weekend was Archie Stafford loosing his elevator during one of his masters rounds.  He had everything but up elevator.  He landed it inverted in the grass with a perfect flair at a perfect speed with absolutely no damage.  You had to be there.  Anyways, that's enough of the gossip.

It was a great weekend.  The Torks are a great club with a great field, who put on a terrific contest.  It was good seeing everyone again after the long winter layoff and a lot of fun.  Saturday night dinner at Hoggy's was a highlight.  Well deserved cold beverages, great food and conversation.  If you weren't able to make it this year, you should definitely plan on next.

Below you'll find the results as well as some pics and videos from the event.
